Auggie's 5K Run & Walk (iPO Event Id#: 5109)
Story and photos by Don Parks
Both runners and walkers took to a flat and fast 5K course entirely on the scenic Heritage Trail. Beginning and ending at Warwood Middle School, the participants headed out and back with the runners and walkers heading in opposite directions.
Tullius would not be caught, but strong finishes by Martinsburg's Brad Sponaugle and Martins Ferry's Mark Foster ruined McEldowney's bid for second. Inside the last mile, Foster and Sponaugle came around him and headed for a sprint to the finish.
In the end it was Tullius at 17:27 with Sponaugle (17:38), who runs for Wheeling Jesuit University, out-sprinting Foster (17:40) for second.
McEldowney cruised home for fourth overall at 17:47.
The women's race was not quite as close as New Concord's Harriet Hunter out-paced the competition to take the win at 19:53. Taking second was Wheeling's own Julie McGee, who improved over her 2000 second place finish by a single second, with a finishing time of 20:31.
The race for third did come down to the wire as Wheeling's Hope Childers (21:21) edged out 13-year-old Marissa Melanko (21:22).
Striding his way to the overall win was Jerry Goodwin with
a time of 30:25 with John Yoker (30:53) taking second.
Third overall, and the first female was Barb Kornbau
As all the runners and walkers finished it was time to head inside for some pizza from Domino's. After that is was on to some great random prizes, specially designed medallions by Sherry Stauver for the many award winners, and an opportunity to cuddle and adopt a new feline companion.
