The Bicycle Book: Wit, Wisdom & Wanderings

New Bike Book Assembled, Tuned and Ready to Ride

book cover
The Bicycle Book: Wit, Wisdom & Wanderings (Satya House Publications, November 2007) is a celebration of the bicycle by people who love to ride. It's a tribute to one of the finest, most efficient, useful machines ever invented. It's packed with original stories, narratives and cartoons from a talented corps of writers and cartoonists.

Thomas Hylton, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and newspaper columnist, kicks off the collection with "Bicycling and Walking," a sensible, prescriptive editorial on why cycling-friendly communities are winners. On his heels is "Keeping Up With Lance," Scott Roberts' exclusive, one-on-one interview with Chris Carmichael, Lance Armstrong's long time coach and friend.

Two prominent names in cycling journalism , Richard Fries, publisher of Bike Culture, and Maurice Tierney, publisher of Dirt Rag , comment on the future of bicycling. Other contributors include Scottish author-cartoonist John Stuart Clark, a.k.a. Brick; Bill Joyce, a national Catholic Press Award winning writer; Portland Monthly Magazine editor Ted Katauskas; and Gianna Bellofatto, whose "Life Is a Bike" series is ever clever, pleasantly quirky, and always an American original.

The Bicycle Book also includes contributions by newspaper editor and touring cyclist, Jill Homer; travel writer and bike book author, Theresa Russell; writer, editor, and former racer, Bradley Swink; Chip Haynes, prolific cycling essayist-humorist and daily bike commuter; owner of Breton (France) Bikes Cycling Holidays and former editor of Cyber Cyclist, Geoff Husband; Wire Donkey Bike Zine editor and founder, Mason St. Clair; Andy Wallen, bike shop owner-mechanic and Ask the Mechanic columnist; and Alan Ira Fleischmann, who celebrates the "geek" in all bikers.

Rounding out the list are Ella Lawrence, Dave and Rhona Fristch, Cathy Dion, Jay T. McCamic and Jim Brink. Scattered throughout the book is a collection of cartoons from artists whose work has appeared in a wide array of magazines, from Dirt Rag, Oregon Cycling, The New Yorker, Esquire, The Progressive, and Discover to Reader's Digest, Forbes, Barron's and Boys' Life. Contributing cartoonists include Jonny Hawkins, Andy Singer, Neal Skorpen, Bob Lafay, Bob LaDrew, Mason St. Clair, Brick, and Kate O'Kelley.

The Bicycle Book: Wit, Wisdom & Wanderings is a brainchild of Jim Joyce, of Pittsburgh, founder of The Bicycle Exchange, a.k.a. Bikexchange.com. He contributes several of his own stories to the book. He plans to donate 15% of his royalties in equal shares to SoldierRide, the League of American Bicyclists, and the United States Association of Blind Athletes' tandem cycling program.
