About Friends of the Cheat
Friends of the Cheat was formed in 1994 after the T&T mine, which had been illegally sealed, blew out which sent millions of gallons of acid mine drainage (AMD) down Muddy Creek and into the Cheat River Canyon.
Since its inception, Friends of the Cheat has brought in over four million dollars to the watershed for AMD remediation and has installed 13 AMD treatment systems.
The organization's recent remediation efforts have been focused on Sovern Run, where Friends of the Cheat just completed a refurbishment and expansion of the Sovern 62 treatment system in the summer of 2010.
Betty and Paul Connelly, homeowners in the Sovern watershed, have seen the results of FOC's efforts, "We have had the cabin by the little waterfall for over 30 years with no aquatic life whatsoever. Small fish were living this past fall, near the end of the Sovern Run. I cannot tell you what a thrill it was to see them for the first time! When the other two long-term landowners nearby, Dan and Cliff, came by this summer we were all like kids. We found some bread and began throwing it in to see the little guys rise."
While AMD remediation is the organization's main focus, FOC has taken on a number of other restoration, education, environmental recreation, and economic development projects. Friends of the Cheat is currently developing the Doug Ferris Outdoor Classroom, a facility for environmental and water resource education, as well as a trail along the scenic Cheat Narrows. FOC will also be restoring a section of Saltlick Creek using natural stream design techniques this spring.
