Showdown in Charleston

Pylers and McCollam, along with about 250 other racers, braved a chilly afternoon in Charleston for the third race in The City of Charleston 2012 Winter Series Walk/Runs. Sunday's 10K, the last and longest installment of the races, was held in Charleston's Kanawha City neighborhood. The out-and-back course snakes along the Kanawha River and through one of the city's most colorful neighborhoods.
Pyles and McCollam blasted out of the pack and were side by side through the first five kilometers. After than, McCollam took the lead and never looked back, powering to the finish line in 31:40.
Pyles, who won this year's Winter Series, was gracious in defeat.
"If I had to lose, I'm glad it's to a good friend," he said. "At the four-mile mark, he took over."
McCollam said he runs with a purpose and cited a favored passage from the Bible. John 8:36 - "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed"
"I'm motivated to help spread the Gospel," he said.
Coming in third was Craig Swisher (34:33).
For the ladies, Allison Cox crossed the finish line first with a time of 38:45. Mikalyn Murphy (44:22) and Lisa Robinson (45:29) rounded out the top three.
Pyles took the overall crown. He was followed by Matthew Bradford and Scott Workman.
