WV State 10K Champs
The early morning hour didn't provide much relief from the hot humid sunny day for runners and walkers participating in the Mountain State Classic 10K Run and 4K walk this Saturday. With temperatures well into the high 80's at the start of the race, runners from the local West Virginia and Ohio area set off for a challenging run through City Park and the streets of Parkersburg. The course crossed over rolling hills and twisting roads towards the finish line and a much needed cool drink. This 10K run is part of the River City Runners' Series and also is the Road Runners Club of America West Virginia 10K Championship.

Also out braving the heat were plenty of young runners in the Mountain State Kid's Classic where they competed for Toys-R-Us gift certificates. With the promise of a cold Kool-Aid and their parents' yells from the finish line, these energetic youngsters beat the heat by sprinting to the finish line. With energy left over, they no sooner scattered to the playground.

Future champions concentrate on the finish line
Taking the early lead in today's 10K race were Kevin Williams (34:37) and Larry Taylor (35:01). Kevin and Larry battled early for the first place finish with Kevin eventually pulling away to find the finish line 24 seconds ahead of Larry. Kevin stated that the course was pretty tough and it was a lot hotter than last year. Kevin is from Malden, WV and attends West Virginia University. Also placing in the overalls today were George Angleos (35:17) for a third place finish and Glen Baldwin (35:17) for fourth.

Capturing the first place overall female win today was Rebecca Schoonover (40:26). Rebecca stated it was hot out there but she went out and just relaxed and had a good time. Taking the second place finish was Susanne Ebersbach with a time of 42:10. Not far behind was Jessica Taylor of Fayetteville with a third place finish of 42:56. Jessica, a senior at Fayetteville High School, traveled today with her father Larry and younger sister Abby who ran in the kid's Classic making it a day of family running. Also finishing in fourth place was Cassandra McCune with a time of 43:25. Cassandra is from Zainsville Ohio and said this is her favorite race.

Running is a family sport at the Mountain State Classic
In the 4K Walk, it was John Mike Nichols (23:47) taking the win over George Macek (24:17) and Doug Kreinik (25:59). The first woman finisher was Martha Marks (26:59) placing fifth overall. The race for second had Jan Stevens (27:44) edging out Darlene Burke (27:47) at the finish.

Topping off the day's events was a picnic for the runners and walkers provided by the River City Runners Club. After a hot run everyone was able to relax and enjoy good food and cool drinks while they mingled with fellow participants, friends and family. Thanks to all the volunteers for their hard work, the City of Parkersburg Police Department and many others, for helping to make the Mountain State Classic once again a great event!
