And they're off!
Start of the race
This weekend as the three day Kanawha-Coal Riverfest celebration kicked off with plenty of good music, delicious food, a beautiful fireworks display and of course plenty of boats, area runners hit the streets of St. Albans in the fast-pace annual 5K run. This out-and-back course is a flat course with just a slight but steady incline to make this one of the fastest courses in the area. The bright sunny day made a picture perfect day for the sprint through the city. Starting off with the presentation of colors by the American Legion Post 073 and the VFW Post 64-19 and the talented Megan Shumate singing the Star Spangled Banner, the Mayor of St. Albans, Jack Gessel started the runners off.

Flying into the finish line for a Male first place finish was Larry Taylor of Fayetteville with a fast time of 15:46. Hardly even out of breath Larry said he enjoys this course and it is very fast. Sprinting to the finish line with just 3 seconds between them was Mike Guinn (16:03) and Ben Redman (16:06) for the second and third place finishes. With a burst of speed Glenn Baldwin crossed the finish line to capture the Male Masters first place finish with a time of 16:35.

Kelly McGraw (18:54) glided across the finish line for the Female first-place win with a good three-minute lead on Kama Shaar who placed second with a time of 22:11. Just 2 seconds behind for the third place finish was Robin Owsley with a time of 22:13. Dashing across the finish line to bring home the Female Masters first-place finish was Karen Huffman with a time of 24 minutes.

A big hand for Fred Waybright, race director, for a well-organized event, St. Albans Fire Department for helping to set up and for the use of their building, St. Albans Police Department for providing traffic assistance and all the volunteers that help to make this 5K an enjoyable event. So if you missed this year's exciting race, be sure to check it out next year.
