What is the Beast of the East? It's a 6-day Non-stop Expedition Adventure Race
350 miles PRO class/ 250 miles SPORT class

The BEAST is BACK! Odyssey's original adventure race is unleashed for another round of challenges in the form of paddling, whitewater swimming, trekking, biking, climbing and orienteering in the remote and beautiful Southwestern corner of Virginia.

Classes & Distances: Soloists, 2-person and 4-person teams will traverse 350 miles in the PRO class or 250 miles in the new SPORT class during this 5-day, non-stop expedition adventure race.

PRO/Sport Classes: We will identify checkpoints (CPs) and assisted checkpoints (ACPs) and give them drop-dead times. Competitors who make these cut-off times will be racing in the PRO category. If any of the cut-off times are missed, competitors will continue racing in the Sport category and will complete a shortened, modified course. The Sport course will encompass all of the disciplines as the PRO course. Competitors will not be asked to specify a category prior to the race. We feel this will encourage teams to complete the PRO course, but will allow for the completion of a shorter course if determined necessary during the race.

What the race consists of: Competitors will be treated to an exciting whitewater swim on the New River, whitewater and flat water canoeing, a magnificent climb, traverse and rappel, and miles upon miles of biking and trekking on rugged trails and historic Civil War roads.

Racers will register and complete gear checks on April 10, then start the race at midnight. From that time until they cross the finish line several days later, teams and soloists will navigate using map and compass through mandatory checkpoints along the course. Support crews will assist racers at various transition points providing gear, food, and bikes.

    Entry Fees:
  • Solo - $800
  • 2 Person - $1500
  • 4 Person - $2800
  • Support (min 1/ max 4) - $75.00
  • Cancellation Fee - $100
Note: OAR is working with a number of charities this year and we ask that every racer bring a bag of clothing and/or canned food to be distributed to a charity after the race.

New for the 2001 Beast: "We're especially excited to introduce whitewater swimming to US racers, and also to provide a new SPORT class to accommodate athletes with differing experience levels," said Don Mann, founder and president of Odyssey Adventure Racing. Currently, Odyssey is the only race organization in the US to offer whitewater swimming.

In 1999: Robert Nagle and Isaac Wilson finished in only 3 days, but we anticipate most teams will finish in 4 to 5 days this year. The new SPORT class will allow for soloists and teams who might not be able to complete the 350 mile-course, to take a modified route and still finish officially within the 5 days.

Sign Up Early: Athletes are encouraged to sign up before February 15th to take advantage of the 10% early bird special. Odyssey is also offering a Competitor Sponsor Program in which companies that sponsor teams that compete in any of Odyssey's events will receive partnership benefits in the form of website links, on-site placement and media exposure.
