Great day for a boat ride
Harpers Ferry: The confluence of the Potomac and the Shenandoah Rivers; the point of convergence between Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia; and, Saturday afternoon, the site of the 3rd Annual Tim Gavin DownRiver Race & Rodeo.

Spring brought the best weather it could offer. Trucks, school buses, and trailers were bustling through the morning breeze making ready for the event, as everyone was ready for a joy-filled day on the water.

The schedule of events had last-minute boaters signing up at the Cliffside Inn until 10 a.m. when the motion shifted to the put-in for the start of the DownRiver Race, a six-mile course that began in Millville, WV and ended at the Rt. 340 Bridge in VA.

Andrew McEwan took charge of the race and came in first with a time of 34:49. Simon Beardmore (38:19) finished second overall and Mark Moore came in third with a time of 40:10.

Rodeo Action
After the DownRiver Race, boaters climbed up the take-out and relaxed in the sun for an hour to recharge themselves for the Rodeo portion of the event.

Down to WhiteHorse Rapid they went, where twenty-some contestants paddled out to spin their boats to the delight of shoreline audience and competition judges. Enthusiastic cheers from the spectators rallied the hustle and talent on the water (see movies and photos).

Back at the Cliffside Inn, when the boats were dry and packed up for the day, Jeff Smith took first in the Rodeo, Danny Stock second, and Zack Hughes splashed his way to third.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Tim Gavin celebration of Harpers Ferry. Thanks to the Bethesda Center of Excellence and the Cliffside Inn for sponsoring the event and we'll see everyone next year!
