Race Start
Sprinting out into a summer rain
It was a great day for ducks at Kanawha State Forest for the 2001 Make-A-Wish Foundation Dream Run 5k and 2 Mile Walk. The day started off misty and cool, but quickly turned soggy and water-logged as over 100 runners and walkers took to the paved course which started and ended in the parking lot by the pool. The downpour even prompted one walker to ask, "So, you're taking pictures for 'iPlayInTheRain.com'?"

The weather was considered a factor by both the male and female first place finishers. According to Robin Owsley, finishing at 20:05 and 23rd overall, "It feels like you have two extra pounds on each foot," with all the water. Zack Sabatino, finishing at 16:20, agreed wholeheartedly, and added, "I figured everyone would be at the Clarksburg 10K, but it was still good competition."

The day's big decision: umbrella or raincoat?
Finishing second overall was Jared Smith, at 17:09, and James Blair finished third, at 17:19. Rounding out the top women finishers was Corinthia Cochran at 23:18, with Emily Stapleton hot on her heels at 23:19.

In spite of the showers, the overall mood of the day was sunny, as everyone was there for a great cause. Many local merchants, such as Subway, Charleston Department Store, Shoney's, Charleston Newspapers, Star Federal Credit Union and its employees, and several others, donated great door prizes, which were given out as the results were tallied. The most coveted items of the day? The three umbrellas that were up for grabs!

Or just enjoy a little rain in the face
Whether or not the runners and walkers received trophies or the door prizes, nearly all agreed that the important thing is that the money raised by today's race is going to help the Southern West Virginia Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation make a terminally ill child's dream come true.

Special thanks to Kanawha Valley Chapter of Credit Unions for sponsoring the race, and to Steve Hewitt, Carolyn Schultz, Dan Smithson, Joetta, Leon, and Erik for keeping the race running smoothly and getting the results to iPlayOutside.com quickly!
