Elizabeth Pile runs away with a victory

Downtown Windber provided the backdrop for the 22nd annual J.I. and John Whalley Memorial Run. Over 175 people came out for the 2-mile walk, a kids fun run, or for those seeking more of a challenge, there was a 5-mile run throughout the Windber area.

The walk was the first of three events of the day starting at 8:30 in the morning. Sixty-two walkers converged at the starting line. When it was all said and done A.J. Harbaugh and Diane Rugh where the first male and female, respectively, to cross the line. Harbaugh completed the course in a time of 17:56 while Rugh finishing 4th overall crossing the line in a time of 19:58.

At 9:00, as the last remaining walkers were nearing the finish, the runners took off. In the men's division Ryan Gleason of Johnstown repeated his 2000 victory finishing first in a time of 27:02. Stephen Gonzalez also of Johnstown finished 8 seconds behind Gleason to capture second place. Gonzalez said that the hills between the third and fourth mile made the race and this is where he and Gleason and started pulling away from the pack. He also went on to say that he liked the organization of the race. Dave Mock also of the mighty Johnstown contingency took third place in a time of 27:32.
