Race start
It looks like it's time to race!
At the Dawg Daze 5K, it was over the river and through the woods - well, thank heavens we didn't go over the river this year! Just through the woods, on the grass, behind the football field, over rocks, mud and mulch on our way to the finish line.

Held at Poor House Farm Park, the race, as you can surmise, was strictly cross-country and made loops around the park. There was a peewee football game going on and the course looped that field twice. Many of the kids paused a second in awe (or bemusement) at the runners mucking their way around the field. In years past, runners literally had to ford a creek but mercifully the race director took that out this year.

Larry Bullock led 52 hardy souls around the course finishing in 17:02 while Katherine Lowery (21:52) was first female. Top masters were Brent Phillips (18:32) and Doris Windsand (22:37). Audrey Lawrence age 11 was the youngest finisher in 28:28 while 66 year old Terence McCarthy (25:33) was the oldest.

Catch me if you can...
The course was more like 2.9 miles but you get no complaints from me as it was a killer! There was a really nasty uphill followed by a screeching downhill just past 2 miles that tested not only your stamina but also your ability to stay on your feet.

Race director Liz McCullough did a nice job marking the course and proceeds from the event went to the Martinsburg High School cross-country team. Many of those team members were out acting as course marshals and cheering the runners on. There were plenty of random prizes after the race and even though the course was tough, everyone seemed to have a good time on a bright and sunny summer morning.
