[Details] [Coverage] [Overall Results]

Many learned a lesson in the Ohiopyle Upstream race this past Saturday, and that lesson is; "In an attaining race DO NOT position yourself upstream of Middy Tilghman in the same eddy- this is a BAD place to be!!" A fairly large number of racers experienced this first hand, and I'm sure that retribution will be forthcoming in any future races of this kind. Greg Akins did a great job organizing this race, with fantastic prizes, and a good turnout, albeit smaller than last year. The river level of 1'11" was ideal for those competing, although the drop from higher levels earlier in the week lead to some problems. Steve Kauffman was literally willed to make the attainment at Bryson's Hole by the large contingent of spectators watching closely, and Greg Akins found himself in the hole there twice. Overall winner was Jess Whittemore, courtesy of what looked like some tactical blocking in the downstream leg of the race by a small fat guy with glasses. Look for a suspiciously fast time for the small guy in next year's Lower Yough National Team Trials as a return of the favor!! National Champion Andrew McEwan left himself with too much to do on the upstream leg to finish second, and Middy "questionable tactics" Tilghman came in third. First non downriver racer was Bob Vernon, although next year he'll obviously be competing in his downriver boat, with Chara O'Brien taking some scalps as the first woman.
