Triple Crown Race #1 Coverage

Race Start
Getting it all started in Allegheny Township
Fine weather for the first Sunday of autumn brought a great crowd of over 125 runners out for a 5K out-and-back run. This was the second in the AK Valley Triple Crown Series. The temperature was actually a little nippy as the race started but, coming back in the home stretch the sun started breaking through the cloud cover to warm things up nicely.

Tammy Slusser of Monroeville, PA almost finished with the overall fastest time, but Curt Brown, of Sewickley, was able to hold her off by two seconds at the finish with a winning time of 18:06. According to Brown the second mile of the course was the toughest and Slusser provided him with some good competition and helped him to close strong.

Coming in second on the male side was Kevin Fairman who finished in 18:53. On the women's side Katie Brown finished in second place with a time just over 21 minutes.

Through two races the triple crown standings show 72-year-old Margretta Lutz holding a several minute lead over second place 60-year-old Larry Ratkus. It seems that a little bit of age certainly dosen't hurt when calculating the adjusted times for the series.

Don't miss the final race in the AK Valley Runners Triple Crown, the New Kensington 10K (aka, NK 10K) on October 20th.
