Matt Barnes defends his title
Runners and spectators alike turned out in Davis to take in the action on a beautiful Saturday morning. While the am temperatures weren't as chilly they had been earlier in the week (Davis already having experienced several frosts) they were comfortable for a morning jaunt. Defending champions were on hand as well as some new hands. Unfortunately missing from the event was local favorite Chip "Crazylegs" Chase who, in 2000, ran the race barefoot to the tune of a sub-23 minute finish. On hand to cheer on the runners was a slew of locals including 2001 Junior National Mountain Biking champ Nick Waite who declined to put on the running shoes for the event.

Leading the pack from the start was the trio of Matt Barnes, Steve Nutter and Luke Fleischman who stayed relatively close for the first mile. By the second mile mark, Fleischman had dropped back leaving Nutter and Barnes to duke it out over the last mile. Barnes (17:31), the defending champion, kept up his determination and fought off Nutter over the final stretch to take the win over Nutter (17:35) by a slim 4 seconds. Fleischman rounded out the top three overall with a time of 18:21.

You couldn't miss the Summerfield Sisters
For the women, Danielle Wassam got an early lead but Debbie Goss kept her in sight. While Goss kept up the pressure, Wassam was able to keep ahead and take the top womens finish (24:10) with Goss coming in second (24:34) while Charlie Waters (25:06) placed third.

Those spectating couldn't miss De Anna and Brie Anna Summerfield, orange clad sisters who swept the 12-under class. Evidence that it's always easier to keep motivation when you have a running partner was also seen. From the get go to the finish line, Mary Williams and Diane Lawrence (the dynamic duo), stayed together - holding their hands together in triumph as they crossed the finish together in a tie.

After the race spectators and participants headed out into downtown Davis to check out the wares being shown by vendors as a part of the Leaf Peepers Festival. Undoubtably, many also made their way to the local restraunts to grab a bite to eat or headed out to their favorite spot to "peep in" on the changing colors.
