The 10th Annual Red Ribbon 5K run took place this past Sunday at the Morgantown Mall. The race is part of Red Ribbon week which promotes a drug free lifestyle. The beautiful fall day brought out over 150 runners out to cover the course which started near Elder Beerman and finished with a climb up Greenbag Road to just below the mall at Snider's Floor Coverings.

Murshid Latif patiently watched as Stephen Hiser and E.J. Linger took off down the first hill at the 10th Annual Red Ribbon 5K. But then he went to work closing the gap, passing the younger runners, and leading everyone to the finish with a winning time of 16:27. To take second, Hiser passed Linger near the finish as they recorded a 16:39 and 16:45, respectively.

Heather Bury

Meanwhile, Heather Bury (17:18) led all the women to the finish, running the whole race up front with the guys, and finishing fourth overall. According to Bury, the course was very fast with the exception of the hill which ended the race. The real battle for the ladies took place for second as Patsy Warner (20:13) had what she needed on the final hill to edge out Sallie Johnson (20:23).

The Back Bay Snowflake Sprint 5K, the MAGP Championship race is the next and last in the MAGP series for 2001. It is taking place on December 2nd, andis run around the Suncrest area of Morgantown with the start and finish at Krepp's Park. We'll see you there!
