Chased to the furnace
When you invite good runners to come to your race, you better be prepared to get what you wished for (or should that be "what for you wished"?). For the 2003 Iron Furnace 5K, it was Mike & Kristin Dudley bringing the speed to put on display. It was a beautiful morning for fast times, and that's what the runners got.

The Dudley's stopped in Lonaconing on their way to Atlanta from Colorado just long enough to run fast and collect a couple of savings bonds for their wins. Mike, a 3 time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier, showed the local favorite Jaron Hawkins what it's all about, winning easily in 15:31 to Hawkins' 16:11.

Denny Mickey, trying to chase Hawkins down, placed third with a 16:46. Tony Yurko of Cumberland placed first for the masters with a time of 17:12.

Not to be outdone, Mrs. Dudley, formerly Kristin Schwartz, showed that she's getting back to her old form after recovering from injury. She posted a stunning 17:05.

Maria Spinnler, an outstanding masters runner from Hagerstown, ran for second overall female and top masters with an 18:49. Maureen Hall hung on for third in 19:25.

Justin Kiddy and Vickie Shockey must have been training on the course all year. They easily notched the top Lonaconing residents spots running 18:51 and 24:59, respectively, for the 5k course.

Awards were given out at the historic Iron Furnace just across from George's Creek (or "crick" as they say in these parts). Runners enjoyed post race food and beverages, as well as the cool sounds of a DJ an beautful morning to be outside.
