Getting Rowdy with the East Coasters
What had started out as a dreary day, turned into a wonderful day at the races for the 2003 installment of the East Coaster's own, the Rowdy Dawg. This year marked the 14th running of the 'dawg' and the race keeps getting better and better each year. Some 65 racers turned out for this race, which is part of the East Coasters Virginia State Championship Mountain Bike Series.

Starting promptly at the crack of noon, waves of riders took off to take a bite out of the course. In some cases the course bit back!

In Pro/Ex Men's action, it was "who's the Mellow Mushroom?" guy, Jason Laxton taking the top of the podium. Wearing a newly re-styled jersey made many spectators wonder who was besting newly local boy Adam Childers.

Pumped-up at the "dawg"
Laxton's strategy of letting Childers go at the start and gauging himself from that, seemed to work for Jason, as he had good legs, and no problems save for a flat with 3 miles to go. This was on his mind, as a slightly similar scenario occurred a few years ago, and caused him to lose a place while fixing his flat. After a quick repair it was full throttle to the finish where he pulled in first, followed by Childers and Shaun Altizer.

The usual suspects in the women's pro/ex category were on the line, with Trish Stevenson taking first. Johanna Kraus and Beverly Robinson followed her in. Trish suffered a double flat, and was more than a little tired from her late night jaunt trying to find the forest service road in the dark. None-the-less, always-cheery Trish had a great time in her first visit to this race.

Sport rider Jen Boxer took the top of her category and commented that all she wanted to do was finish before Adam (Childers) lapped her.

Trish throws us a smile
As always, the fine folks at East Coasters Cycling and Fitness put on a great race, with a well-marked course and helpful marshals who double as cheerleaders. Overheard while sitting at the "intersection" was not your normal 'nice job'. If you see Teresa Martinez, ask her what she yelled to Chris Pohowsky! It might be a tad R rated for our gentle readers, but certainly funny!

Thanks also to Than White who did a stellar job getting the planets to align for the race, from port-a-potties, tents, food and prizes, volunteer coordination, and Forest Service permission. Give him a pat on the back when you see him next.

Be sure to turn out for the final race in the East Coaster's VA State Championship Mountain Bike Series, at Wolf Gap. Be a part of race history for this first ever venue.
