Racing into a true
Fall Classic
The Tug Valley Road Runners couldn't have special ordered a better day for this year's Mountain Heritage Fall Classic 6k Trail Run at R.D. Bailey Lake in Gilbert. Much warmer than last year's frosty temperatures, but not so warm that the runners were uncomfortable. Leaves were starting to turn on the surrounding hills, the sky was a brilliant blue, and the lake shimmered in the sun.

Runners ran most of the course on an old railroad bed and a utility road, but the distance they ran on the hilly and rough forest trail made or broke the race for several folks. The utility road itself included the incline to the boat ramp and back out, which was also quite challenging. (I rode it in a truck, and wouldn't have wanted to walk it, much less run it.)

A scenic day for a challenging run
Frank Stanley, overcoming great odds in the past few years (in the form of a broken femur, no less), conquered the course with a time of 22:08. Behind him was Randall Watts, who finished with a time of 27:32. And wrapping up the top three was Harold Osborne, with a time of 28:13.

Fourth place was Robin Wiener, first finishing female, hot on Harold's heels with a time of 28:15. With a time of 32:08, Katrina Blankenship (the founder of this race, with her brother), finished second, and 9th overall. And in third place for the females, Laura Jerrell finished 11th overall, with a time of 33:45.

Awards were handed out at the visitor's center overlooking the lake and dam, and contenders for the TVRRC Series were announced, and those awards will be handed out at a dinner in November. Special thanks go to Park Ranger Scott Hannah for being so accommodating to the TVRRC!
