Race Start
Ready, Get Wet, Go!
On race day, it felt like winter was starting early this year. Even though the thermometers were reading in the low 50's, it felt like it was in the 30's on Saturday. On top of it all, before and at the beginning of the race it was raining! But, this weather did not stop the runners from coming out for the Sam Warner 5K, formerly the Salem Apple Butter Festival 5K. This was the 14th race in the Clarksburg Area Race Series (CARS).

The race was a point to point course with the start at the Rails to Trails across from the East Resources (formerly the Pennzoil Building) on Flinderation Street and the finish on the Rail to Trail at the Railroad Street by the Dollar Store in downtown Salem. The runners ran on the Rail-Trail for the entire race. (Watch out for the mud puddles on the course).

Speeding toward the finish in Salem
It was a tight start on the trail with 86 runners lined up on the path, but the person taking it out and winning the race was Ryan Sullivan with a time of 17:40. Finishing in second place was Joey Herron with a time of 18:14. Rounding out the top 3 male finishers was Andrew Skidmore with a time of 18:31. Great Job in this weather!!

For the women, the winner was Mary Beth Helmick with a time of 25:23. Coming in second place was Christie Cunningham with a time of 26:00. Third place finisher was Heather Meit with a time of 26:43. Way to go ladies!!

After the finish, the runners could enjoy the arts, crafts and foods of the Apple Butter Festival that goes on during the weekend in Salem. One of the main attractions of this festival was watching apple butter being made in open copper kettles.

And a final thanks to everyone who helped with the race!
