Sprinting through a fall morning
It was a beautiful autumn morning in Midland, Maryland, and although Halloween was still a week away, plenty of runners showed up in costume. The morning was a cool 40 degrees, and the fog was only beginning to lift off of the mountains as race time approached.

With the sun beginning to peek through the clouds, the 5k run and 1.5 mile walk were off.

Twenty year old Justin Marshall took the early lead, but local favorite, another 20 year old, Jaron Hawkins took over at 800 meters and went on to win in a time of 15:53. Marshall ran for second in 18:04 while 16 year old Dan Metzger took third with a time of 18:31.

So that's what they wear under grass skirts!
Racing in costume for Halloween
On the women's side, youth reigned supreme as well. Twenty-two year old Amie Lindley won with a time of 20:39 over 13 year old Lauren MacFawn who ran a 21:13. Showing us that you don't have to slow down after 40, 44 year old Becky Cosner finished third in 21:54.

After the fun run/walk and 5k were done, the kids got to run for some Halloween treats. Whether they were in costume or not, the kids toed the line for a 50 yard dash to earn some trick or treat bags. Meanwhile, the adults were treated to donuts and coffee, and some very original trophies.

The Trick or Treat 5k benefits the Westmar Cross Country team. Many thanks to Frostburg State's Cross Country team for coming out to volunteer their time to help out with the race.
