A good crowd on a fine day
Davis and Elkins College (D&E) continued it's 100th birthday celebration race series with the 4th in the series, the Elkins YMCA 5K on Saturday. The Century Medallion Race Series is new this year.

It helps commemorate D&E's 100 years of service in the community and encourage physical fitness by rewarding individuals who participate in local running and walking events. If a racer finishes all 7 of the Century Medallion Race Series, they win 100 dollars. If they finish 6 they get 50 dollars, and if they finish 5 they get 25 dollars.

Making it a family day
The race benefitted the YMCA progams in Elkins which include children and adults. All programs help to promote a healthy lifestyle, including health enhancement, rehabilitation, and so on. On an oddly cool August day over 100 racers showed up in front of the Elkins YMCA 5K ready to race.

The course of the race was in downtown Elkins on Davis Ave., the racers began at the YMCA, looped around a 5K course, and ended back at the YMCA. Walkers also started raced the same route.

Thanks for a great time
After the race the racers were provided with refreshments, as they awaited the results to receive their well-earned trophies. It was a fun day, and I would encourage anyone to participate in the next few races. Special thanks to Sid Gillispie, and to the YMCA for providing a race for everyone to come out and enjoy.

The next race in the Davis & Elkins Century Medallion Race Series is the Kenneth Cunningham Memorial Run on August 21, 2004 at the Davis & Elkins Athletic Field.
