Dream Run
Cooler temps in Kanawha
Ivan the Terrible chased many folks away from events on Saturday, September 18, but Kanawha State Forest was filled with runners and walkers ready to get out again after the heavy downpours in the days leading up to the race. That was great news for the folks at the Make-A-Wish Dream Run'04.

The morning was a damp and chilly one, filled with the music of roaring water just barely within it's banks, punctuated by the percussion of running shoes on pavement. That is, once the Dream Run's perpetually tardy timekeeper arrived.

Ben Hamer finished the out-and-back course first with a time of 19:53. Dennis Eye finished in second place with a flat 20:00 time. Finishing third place overall and first place for the women was Shannon Harty. Harry Bruner finished third for the men with a time of 20:40. Caitlin Miller finished in second place for the females at 24:20, and the women's third-place finisher was Ina Platt, with a time of 25:43.

Walkers and Runners help the worthy cause
On the other side of the parking lot, the walkers geared up for their two-mile test. Beth Ann Brown blew away the competition, coming in first overall, and the first finishing male was Larry Watts.

The proceeds from the race go to support the Southern WV Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Any child to the age of 18 who is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness eligible to receive a "wish" from the Foundation - as indicated by the organizers, the proceeds from this race usually fund one wish.

Dream Run
Running through the park
Sometimes the wishes are trips to Disney World, or to see a Dallas Cowboys football game. And the wish doesn't include just the ill child, but the entire family. What a great reason to come out and run!

The Dream Run is sponsored by the Kanawha Valley Chapter of the WV Credit Union League with most area credit unions playing a big part in making it a success. All proceeds from entry fees and sponsors benefit the Southern WV Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation which provides dreams come true adventures for local children with life-threatening illnesses. Thanks to Carolyn Schultz and her amazing volunteers and the "booty haulers" who were the folks that went out and gathered lots and lots of door-prize donations.
