A Chilly Day in Charleston; Taylor Battles

Over 100 racers head out on the course
Larry Taylor was battling a cold and battling the cold.

The Fayetteville runner said he was sidelined all week by a pretty nasty bug, and had spent most of his time recovering on the couch. To make matters worse, the weather for the Joker 4 Mile Run/2 Mile Walk wasn't exactly for the faint of heart.

Saturday morning in Charleston was pretty cold and pretty windy. While it wasn't bone chilling, the mercury hovered just above freezing for most of the race.

But by the way Taylor handled the course, he didn't show any ill effects from the chilly weather or the previous week's bug.

On a flat fast road course that sneaks around the Kanawha City neighborhood located behind Charleston Area Medical Center's Memorial Hospital.

Taylor got out quick and never looked back, crossing the finish line in 23:21.

"I'm getting better," he said.

For the women, Mandy Musick from Ashland, Ky., took the top spot with a time of 28:38. Although she admitted the weather wasn't exactly cooperating.

"It's a little colder than I would have liked," she said.

A lot people might have felt the same, but 101 racers and walkers made it happen on Saturday and showed the joke was on everyone who stayed inside.

Presented by Charleston Parks and Recreation, this race was just one in a series of city-wide active events. On Saturday, June 14 2008, Run with a Cop behind the CAMC Memorial Hospital. This 5K run and walk encourages businesses to participate in the corporate competition! Come enjoy the flat, fast course.

Proceeds will benefit Special Olympics of West Virginia.
