Presenting the WV Trilogy; a run of days across the Eastern Continental Divide and West Virginia's highest hill, Spruce Knob.

This very special run traverses the WV Highlands and her unique landscapes. The hearty runners that tackle this event will be rewarded with spectacular views of waterfalls, beautiful fall foliage, and breathtaking vistas that will be forever etched upon their hearts.

Race headquarters will be The Mountain Institute's 400 acre outdoor education facility in the shadow of Spruce Knob.

While the Trilogy is designed as a three day stage race, those wishing to run only one or two of the races may submit entries for individual races.

  • 50K Run on Day 1, 50 Mile Run on Day 2, Half Marathon Run on Day 3

  • Refunds will be granted minus $10 through 9/16/11. No entry fees will be refunded after 9/16/11.

    What You Get

      Trilogy 50K/50M/HM Entrants (Those who do all 3.)
      Will receive a Patagonia Cap 3 Zip Neck and a Run For The Hills Half Marathon cotton T and Thur./Fri./Sat. pre-race dinners, Sunday breakfast and lunch.

      50K Only Entrants
      Will receive a Patagonia Cap 2 Zip Neck and Thur. pre-race dinner.

      50 Mile Only Entrants
      Will receive a Patagonia Cap 2 Zip Neck and Fri. pre-race dinner.

      Run For The Hills Half Marathon Only Entrants
      Will receive a cotton T. Plus Sat. pre-race dinner, Sunday breakfast and lunch

      Additional meals for runners or guests may be purchased for $10 each.

    50K/Friday 7:00am . 50 Miler/Saturday 6:00am . 1/2 Marathon/Sunday 9:00am

    Time Limit

    To complete the 50k is 10.5 hours. The time limit to complete the 50 mile is 14 hours. Relative cutoff times for appropriate aid stations will be forthcoming.

    Course

    Here are some general statements about the 94 miles or 151 kilometers to be traversed. The course is 93% trail, 6.75% dirt road, 0.25% paved. There are no extended rocky, technical trails. The only part that might qualify as "rocky" would be a mile or so of Huckleberry Trail on top of Spruce Mountain on Day Two. However this section is so beautiful you won't mind a few rocks. There are some stream crossing on Day One and Two, none on day Three. The profiles below exaggerate the the steepness, but they do indicate where you will be climbing.     Packet Pick-Up

    Packet pickup starts 4:30pm Thurs. Oct. 6, Main Yurt at The Mountain Institute. Packets for the individual 50k/50m/HM entrants may also be picked up October 6, or on the evening before the respective run at the same location.

    There will be a brief prerace meeting at 7:00pm following dinner Thursday as well as following evenings.

    Awards

      Awards for the Trilogy will be 1st, 2nd & 3rd place men & women open, 1st place men & women 50 and over.

      Awards for the Run For The Hills will be 17 & under, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+.

      There will be daily recognition awards for the 50k and 50 mile first place man & woman.

    Crew Access to the Course(s)

    Crew access will be limited to the aid stations outlined in the Course Description section. For the safety and consideration of all participants, other aid stations or roads that runners will be on are closed to crew and vehicles.

    About WVMTR

    The objective of the West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners (WVMTR) is to encourage running and the healthy, positive qualities running encompasses. They achieve this by holding a trail run series, races, non-competitive club runs, social events, assisting other organizations with running events, and in general just running around having fun. They are a non-profit, affiliated with the Road Runners Club of America.
