What is Rain Day? Rain Day got its beginning in the Daly & Spraggs Drug Store, located in the center of Waynesburg. Legend has it that one day a farmer was in the drugstore and mentioned to Byron Daly that it would rain the next day, July 29. Mr. Daly asked him how he knew and he replied that it always rained on his birthday, and a luck would have it, today was the day. So he kept a journal for several years where he recorded the weather, and it always seemed to rain on July 29th. Mr. Daly thought this was too sure a thing to let pass, so he started betting salesmen who came into his drugstore that it would rain in Waynesburg on July 29. So, how many years has it rained? About 109 out of the last 131 years!
Keeping with tradition, like Daly, the town now wagers a hat. Only now the hats come from famous people all over the country, such as Jay Leno, Donald Trump, the Dixie Chicks, and many others. Troy Polamalu, safety for the Superbowl XL Pittsburgh Steelers Champions will bet his hat against the rain on Rain Day; placing his bet with Waynesburg Mayor, Blair Zimmerman. Race Details:
- Saturday, July 28, High and Porter Street intersection, Waynesburg, PA
- Race Day Registration starts at 8:15 am (lot behind McCraken Pharmacy)
- Children's 1 Mile Run starts at 9:00 am
- 5K Run and Walk starts at 9:30 am
Entry Fees: Print your [Entry Form] and save!
- 5K Run and Walk.... $15 by July 20, $18 thereafter
- Children's 1 Mile Run.... $10 by July 20, $12 thereafter
Awards: The top 3 male and female overall runners receive awards. Top 3 male and female in each age group receive awards. Awards for the top two walkers in each age division and all kids receive ribbons, and medals for the top three boys and girls in each age division.
Age Divisions:
Children's 1 Mile Run - 5 and under, 6-7, 8-9, 10-12
5K Run and Walk - 14 and under, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+
Course: Participants takke off from the intersection of High and Porter Streets in Waynesburg. It's out-and-back with some rolling hills. One water stop will be stationed at the half-way mark.
