OF SPECIAL NOTE

Twelve teams competed in 2009. The RoadKill Cook-off winners were Two Crooks and A Cook, with their winning recipe "South-of-the-border Mishap," armadillo, roadrunner and hitchhiker tacos. In addition to a receiving $1000 for their efforts, Two Crooks and a Cook also ran away with the People's Choice Award, decided by ballot of visitors at the Festival.

Cook-off veterans, The Coal Hollow Brothers, returned this year to snag second place and a $450 cash prize. The Brothers cooked up "Frogut's Jumpin' Jamabalaya," which included frog meat, sausage and chicken. The Brothers, wearing frontier-style period costumes, also won the Showmanship Award, worth a $50 gift certificate.

The judges awarded third place and $225 to a local team, the Ridge Runners, and its specialite' de la maison, "Smeared Hog with Groundhog Gravy." The entree was accompanied by "Bear Butt Appetizers," made with real bear meat and "Slime Juice," a concoction of grapes, sherbet and ginger ale.

The event was covered by Adam Gertler and a television crew from the Fine Living Network from Los Angeles, California. Gertler also captained the Bumper Crop Cafe' cooking team during the event.

The judges for 2009 were Jay Anderson, cooking instructor at Pierpont Culinary Academy, in Fairmont; Nicole Bowman, of Morgantown, editor of WV Living magazine and Kathleen Willcox, of New York City, culinary student and contributing writer for the "Eat Me Daily" Web site.

The RoadKill Cook-off was featured in a segment on the Fine Living Channel in January.
