Middle Mountain Momma is Part of 3 Series in 2012 . . .

Race Registration . . . is from 8:30am to 11:30 am at the Discovery Center area

START . . . 12:00 pm noon, (classes begin on 1-2 minute staggers)

Instead of making amateur and local Pro riders chase a national series, especially in today's economic conditions, the US Cup is partnering with premier venues, promoters and races from across the country to create a cohesive network of qualifiers.

The MMM is honored to join Massautten's famous Hoo-Ha! in this series, but the Hoo-Ha! has the additional credential of being the eastern triple crown final.

The WVMBA Ultra Series was created in the wake of our own XXC category creation. It's fantastic to be part of West Virginia's great heritage, and future.

The Virginia Off Road Series honors us as well, this year accommodating our spot on the first Sunday in May, making way for MMM's debut inclusion on the schedule. We are honored to be part of the ongoing tradition of Virginia series racing we helped pioneer lo' those many years ago.

The best news is that the folks at US Cup have their eye squarely on the racer's experience, and are committed to making that experience the best possible. With the energy and enthusiasm the US Cup brings, mountain bike racing receives a much needed adrenaline injection. Here's the US Cup schedule.

  • XXC Racers - Double XC'ers leave the state park and traipse across the coolest big-ring pedal-assist slight downhill on the Middle Mountain Ridge--all the way--to route 125. Then, take a quick lasso-loop on ancient CCC, blueberry bush-infested trails of Brushy Ridge, and then you'll know that not many people have pedaled through there before! Later, after climbing route 125 again for a 4 mile ascent (capped with a 1/2 mile trail up Middle Mountain's backside that burns-baby-burns), you rejoin the 21 mile XC loop, making the best course on the planet 10 steps better.

  • XC Racers - The course provides mass-quantities of single-track and it is almost entirely unduplicated trail! There's so much single-track you might actually seek something wider after a while. Moreover, about the only non-single-track sections of the 21-mile-one-lap race are the short start road, a few yards of asphalt, and that is it. And not only is it single-track, it's freaking majestic single-track.

Parking

Note that if you park in the State Park, you will need to pay park fee (3 bucks). If you choose not to pay the Douthat parking fee, be prepared to pay the $50 parking FINE. Staging is in the Discovery Center area, which is located at the end of a dirt left turn (traveling north through the park). Parking is tight, so pooling of the cars is a terrific idea.

About the Area

A lovely trout-stuffed pay-to-fish lake lies nestled in the valley formed by Beard's Gap and Middle Mountains, but it's up the sides of the slopes where you'll find the real beauty of Douthat State Park. For instance, note the profound web of New Deal singletrack trails, circa 1936, that lace the slopes on both sides of the pond. We like to refer to this area as something near to mountain bike Disneyland. If you raced any edition on this legendary course, you know what we mean. God bless Franklin Delano Roosevelt and New Deals everywhere.
